Xbox ONE: Unboxing Impressions

So lets just get right to it!

THE PHYSICAL UNBOXING

The box was pretty big, unpacking it's contents revealed that the xbox itself is also large, larger than any console on the market today.  The Kinect was included of course and it is necessary to truly utilize the features Xbox ONE has to offer.  The Xbox ONE still has an external brick, it's also quite large.  Being a former Xbox 360 player, setting the box up was second nature for me.  The initial update took about 10 minutes (It was a pretty big update lol).  I didn't setup the cable or computer settings, otherwise It would have taken forever.  After that I setup the Kinect, standard audio test, lasted about 5 minutes.  There was a neat intro that eventually took me to the home screen.  The dashboard still subtly resembles Windows 8 (which is now 8.1) but the interface looks crisp!  The Kinect, Snap, TV, Music, Multi-tasking, and other features are definitely noteworthy.  It is easy to see why the XBOX ONE is $100 more than the PS4 with everything Microsoft is trying to do. At least the setup process was black and white.  So because of that:

I give it an A

XBOX LIVE

You can't do anything worthwhile on this console without a GOLD xbox live subscription.  It cost $60 for a year, $10 more than PSN's year subscription.  I feel like Microsoft could have come down on the price considering they are already forcing people to buy the Kinect.  The service itself runs ok, but the catch 22 is the fact that Microsoft reserves the right to tamper with this service.  Given their recent flip flopping in commitment to the end user (which is us the consumer), I already notice that xbox live is becoming a hub for ads, gimmicky third party applications and services that illicit our personal information.  The hardware behind Microsoft's network infrastructure is good enough. I just don't know how long that will matter.

C+

GAME PLAY

Everything plays smoothly.  Interacting with the menus using Kinect works alot better than the old Kinect, but there are still a few bugs to be worked out.  I'm sure a couple patches will fix those nuisances.  Since Microsoft's primary goal is to dominate the living room, I don't feel this category fully encompasses all the feature rich applications the Xbox ONE has.  But rest assured, it plays games and plays them well.  Does it play the games "Next-Gen" well???  I think it depends on the game personally.  Some games may better use Xbox ONE's next gen features than others.  It doesn't play in a native 1080p resolution so what you have is a game that looks better than the 360, but not quite as crisp as the PS4 (Assuming you can see the difference). With Microsoft's deep pockets and firm grasp of technology I really did expect them to surpass the PS4 in terms of hardware and software as seen through Game play and UI interface but so far I do not feel that is the case.

B+

THE CONTROLLER

To me, I thought it was perfect.

A+

Conclusion

The games run smooth, there are still some kinks to work out with the Kinect but for the most part it runs really well.  Everything from software and hardware looks like an improvement over the Xbox 360.  The controller felt really good in my hands.  However, My impressions of the Xbox ONE out of it's box was not so one sided.  In my opinion, It's awfully big for a next generation console, and that is not including the Kinect and external power brick. What my eyes see is a system that is inferior in specs and design to the PlayStation 4.  It plays games well, but most of the ONE's innovative changes come from the interactions through Kinect.  Voice recognition and body gestures are being championed more than ever and while they are convenient, I've yet to see them play an integral role in any worthwhile video game to date.  It displays at a native 720p too.  Not a big deal for most but certainly a con when compared to PS4's native 1080p.  Of course, this is all to say, these features were meant to deepen the interaction with the dashboard, the TV apps, the Video streaming apps, and other Microsoft living room activity.  A lot of stuff I really don't care about if the system wasn't designed optimally for games first.  Microsoft may be trying to change the nature of what "next generation" means, but only time will reveal Microsoft's true agenda.

My Overall Impression: B

I'm convinced that those who put down the investment on this console will have a great experience with it.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts as things develop and/or change.  If you can wait until the price drops I highly recommend doing so!

Here is a great synopsis on the Xbox ONE, watch it here!

PlayStation 4: First Impressions!

Hello, Hello!

So it's been craziness.  I went to the midnight launch in our area for the PlayStation 4.  It was crazy. Everyone was cheering for each console that walked out of the door.  I stored mine away when I got home, and after work Friday me and my boss (who decided to come out to my unboxing party) pulled the box out of the bag.

Several fist pumps later, we took it out the box.  Christmas came early.  Just wanted to give you guys my two cents on my experience with the PlayStation 4.  I threw an "unboxing" party at my house.  The demographic consisted of all kinds of people, with various expectations.  It was truly a great time and I'm grateful for everyone who came out to play and give their respective thoughts:

1) THE PHYSICAL UNBOXING

Everything came out neat and easy.  Nothing was broken, all hardware ports on the system were functional. It included all the necessary components needed to play (of course.)  I even found it novel that it had an HDMI cable in the box for it's native 1080p resolution.  No AV cable at all.  Further more, The generation I grew up in used RF cables (Sega Genesis, lol.)...ah the nostalgia... As you know, the PS4 must undergo a mandatory day one update in order for you to play properly. After removing the packaging and hooking the system up the update began immediately.  The update went incredibly fast (lasted approx 2 minutes).  After the update completed, the console restarted itself.
I put in Call Of Duty: Ghosts.  The system initialized that game's download, then the console restarted after it was done saving the game to hard drive. That game downloaded with no issues and loaded ridiculously fast.  I loaded my PSN profile up through an update too.  Same thing, everything went super fast.  The whole setup process only took me 15 minutes.

I give this part an A

2) PLAYSTATION NETWORK

At the unboxing party we all discovered that PSN was down.  I got to ellicit everyone's opinion in the room.  Honestly some didn't care that much.  It was no surprise to me that the network was temporarily overloaded.  When a million people jump on a newly integrated network over night it is pretty reasonable to have the servers get jammed up. However, Given Sony's shaky history with their PS3 online networking, this down time did bring concern to a few others.  The general consensus would agree that on launch night, nobody wants to be stuck playing campaign mode or split screen against bots on Call Of Duty: Ghosts all night (especially if they aren't distracted by free food and beverages at a party......thankfully we were).  Battlefield 4's online capabilities didn't even work at all (I hear EA also had something to do with that in Battlefield's case). There were drinks and pizza and a Sega genesis in my other room but I say this with all seriousness,

Ain't nobody got time for that

Regardless, Sony did a great job anticipating the unknown hiccups and had the network up by the end of the night.  It ran great too!

I'll give that experience a B-

3) GAME PLAY

1080p up-scaled looks amazing as we all know.  PS4's 1080p native looks amazingly better! Seriously. The graphics look smooth.  For those who care about resolution I will tell you that it looks better than anything on the market currently (and supposedly the 360 and PS3 already upscale certain AAA titles to 1080p).  Of course when Xbox One hits the shelves we'll be able to determine which is better.  For now, I'm going to believe 1080p "native" makes a difference! Both Call Of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 looked and played like a next gen game should.  No lag, no bugs, no problems...

Verdict? A+

4) THE CONTROLLER

For me, I love the feel of the Xbox controller since I came from the 360 system. So I was skeptical of the Dualshock 4. On the contrary, It felt better than I expected.  Now granted I had played with it before launch, but it wasn't for any first person shooters or other games I usually play.  It was for "Knack".  Now, having played other games with it, I am convinced I will be able to readjust.  I like everything about the controller and it feels OK when I play FPS games. I expect in a month or two it will feel more natural.  All of it's features are spot on, looking forward to seeing how game developers utilize this controller in the future.

For now I'll give it a B+

FINALLY,

Setting the rest of the applications up didn't take long (Netflix, Hulu, PSN, etc...)  I highly encourage you to consider getting a PSN+ account to fully take advantage of the premium experience that Sony is striving to provide.  Even if you don't you can still access most non game-related applications with their free PSN.  The PlayStation main menu has been revamped and made to look simple and clean, which I thought was much needed.  It served very well as living room entertainment during the party.  This year Sony made a comeback of sorts comparatively speaking in North America, but more importantly, they regained influence over the gaming market as a whole (and consequently, the non gaming market too).

MY overall first impression of PS4: A-

I'll get my hands on an Xbox One and let you know how that goes...
But for now, I feel like I spent my money on the right thing this year...

Here is a neat article which highlights Sony's most recent sales achievement:

Thanks to everyone who shared their feelings to me over the past year leading up to launch night.
Another shout to those who have followed me on TWITTER FB and LinkedIn as well!

Stay tuned for more.

Peace

Xbox One - PlayStation 4

So what now?  Hopefully your minds are all made up by now.  Right?

I have listened to compelling argumentfrom both camps stating why one should get a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, but I would like to focus on three things here:

1)  LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND

Whatever clout Microsoft had over Sony in North America during the Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3 era is history.  What matters now is what these NEXT generation consoles stand for and how they represent the face of today's new agenda. Microsoft has made more than enough changes to the original Xbox One policies to realign itself more closely to the desires of most present day gamers. Lets not kid ourselves though...Microsoft's initial unpopular policies will go on as background processes, being developed and perfected for a time when gaming and media is better suited exclusively for cloud computing and high speed data transfers.  With that being said, I feel Microsoft's agenda has changed since the birth of the 360. Before, Xbox and ultimately Xbox 360 came out solely focused on games, great games.  Music services, video services, social media were offered too of course, but there was no mistaking the Xbox 360 for an always on, one-box-does-all device (ie Xbox One).  Sorry.  Xbox One is always on anymore, that was policy reversal they made... Anyways.  I'm not discrediting change, but their timing and presentation of Xbox One wearing all these hats in the beggining was lost in translation to it's core supporters.  Sony was probably planning on doing things along the same vein, but regardless, they shrewdly played their cards right this year and focused majorly on the much needed improvements over it's PlayStation 3 model, AAA exclusives and strong Indie Game support to position themselves as a strong first choice among gamers this holiday season (according to pre-order sales.) There is a lot to look forward to and learn about.  Looking back at this point won't help you in your decision.

2)  SPECS DON'T LIE...BUT

Hardware specs this year are fairly even between both systems.  Researchers and analyst say the PlayStation 4 still has an edge over the Xbox One, but these claims can't be qualified by YOU because you don't have the luxury of extensively testing both systems. That being said, hold on to your spec sheets with a grain of salt.  The PS3 specs were better than the Xbox 360 but the Xbox 360's design allowed it to utilize it's hardware and software resources more efficiently which led to the system becoming the more popular machine for developers to use.  I still believe this year Sony has truly grown through it's past challenges by admitting them and actually resolving them. Additionally, we've seen that specs are not indicative of a concrete showing in the world of technology. Changes are constantly being made, for better or worse.  Commentaries are always adding varying perspectives. The results of benchmark tests are increasingly being explained away as circumstantial, there by inconsequential to actual game play on a broad consumer level.  Companies can and will update and tweak their consoles at their discretion.  One advantage today could easily be trumped tomorrow by the opposition.  Time will tell of course, but long story short, don't get too caught up in the spec sheet debate this year! The latest issue of Game Informer has a great spread comparing the two systems specs.  If you are not a member, sign up and read it.  It's free.  It's games and stuff.  Do it.
In any event, Just be a smart consumer and go with your preference.

3)  SPEAKING OF PREFERENCE...

There is no right or wrong choice this year.  In case you were wondering, I'm still going to get the PlayStation 4 this year. Ironically, I was a loyal Xbox owner since the original launched.  I sold my 360 and peripherals at the beginning of this year for non game related reasons but I decided it would be to my benefit to stay gameless and approach these next generation consoles sober minded and unbiased.  I am no longer a "fan" of one system or another...but I have always been a fan of gaming.  That being said, the Xbox One looked pretty good to me until Microsoft shook my consumer confidence in their interests as a company.  They made some highly unpopular policy decisions early on which has since then been reversed.  BUT.  I still don't feel confident that Microsoft won't try to flippantly reinstate some of these policies later on down the line.  This would most definitely ruin the Xbox ONE experience they are trying to currently revive.  Time will tell.  I believe time is on Microsoft's side in the long run, but I believe Sony's camp controls the momentum in the mean time.  This is not to say Sony won't or can't make the same mistakes, they have before.  If they do it again I'll leave them too.  If I feel any company is trying to artificially create a need or environment that I don't agree with THROWING MONEY AT IT WON'T CHANGE THE COMPANY (or the issue).  Save your pennies. Big companies think they are infallible so they run the risk of doing whatever they want.  For example, the biggest problem with Facebook, aside from NOT listening to it's users feedback, was that it changed too much too drastically...  The result was a pain.  Their site was always confusing, our privacy policies were always reset, there was always something new to learn or something old we liked removed, it never felt like Facebook would do anything about it either.  Sure concessions were made here and there, but ultimately FB reverted back to their scheme...Sound familiar?  Too much change, too drastic.

The scales will tilt in favor of the agenda that understands the "gaming" market most for now. There may come a time when we can assume the hybrid notion of combining social media, social viewing, and social gaming all through one console, tied neatly together with a nifty voice recognition software... When the need for this becomes evidently clear and technically feasible on enough consumer fronts that would make the implementation of such hybrid system successful, then by all means pull the trigger!  But you cannot superficially create that need through policies that change too much too drastically (ahem... Microsoft).  While I feel Microsoft understands that, Sony utilized it's fresh slate in the PlayStation 4 to gain people's trust this year instead of going for the more ambitious game changer. Seeing how we live in a world where our personal information is being collected daily by hundreds of companies and sold without our consent for the sake of personalized ads; Trust is hard to come by in a corporation.  So I'll gladly give it to them considering the situation... If Sony and Microsoft drop the ball PC gaming is a great alternative... The Wii U isn't a console I prefer but you better believe I'll play that before I get trapped between two greedy companies holding the gaming industry at gun point...Or maybe I'll just go back to playing Nintendo 64 or Gameboy Color.  I still have my sega genesis games.  Dreamcast was fun too.

AT THE END OF DAY I'm excited to see how things will pan out.  I got a chance to use the PlayStation 4 Dualshock 4 controller and Xbox One's controller.  Both felt GREAT.  I plan on bringing my buddy over with his Xbox One after it is released and comparing the feel and game play of both systems.

(Of course he doesn't know this yet! Lol!)

Follow me on TWITTER for more updates my friends.  When the systems do launch I'll be sure to give you more feedback!

Doing Something You Love

Over the past 4 years I've learned that if there is something that you are especially passionate about, pursue it.  In today's economy it's become increasingly difficult to find a job, especially one you love.  I want to single out a few practical things that have helped me position myself to turn what I love into a career.

1)  Discover What You Love To Do

For me finding my passion really gave me the insight necessary to realistically position myself to do something I love for a living.  I like reading, researching and fixing computers, phones, video game consoles, paintball guns and staying informed on the industries associated with these things.  It never occurred to me that I could actually make a living doing these things amidst applying for menial jobs here and there.  After this realization I asked myself, what do people who have similar interests do for a living?  Asking questions like this will help you determine how you can use your talents in a employed setting.

2) Plan Your Steps

I hate to make lists and write things down.  However, in order to turn abstract thoughts into tangible surreal opportunities it helps to have an outline you can look at.  It can be cumbersome, but you need a plan.  I started listing out all the information I could find.  To help with getting that information I would bounce ideas off of family, good friends, call companies and talk to HR, or chat with managers and co workers I already knew from other places.  I used LinkedIn a lot to network with various professionals (in addition to Twitter and Google+).  I found LinkedIn to be the most helpful for me.  If you have a LinkedIn and would like to network with me click here.  You can also go to career fairs, internships and community service projects.  These things will challenge you to become a more proficient networker while giving you valuable exposure to your field of interest.

After you have written all these things down refer back to your list periodically to see if anything changes as it will help you derive some clarity from all the research you've done.  Ask lots of questions:  "Do I still care?  Am I completing any tasks in a timely fashion?  What do I need to do next?  Is there a pattern of interest that has appeared?"  Over time this accumulated knowledge will help you to become an expert in your field too.  Take everything into account and keep your resume updated.  Believe me, a specialist who has a solid plan is the candidate hiring employers are going to prefer compared to someone whose efforts look one dimensional...or non existent!

3) Expect Hard Times

It's not easy to pursue something as elusive as a dream.  It's hard to stay motivated if nobody supports your dream.  It's hard to stay grateful about your 9 to 5 when you look left and right and it feels like everyone else is on cloud 9 to 5 doing what they love. On the other hand, maybe hard times look different for you.  You may not even have a 9 to 5.  Maybe you work the graveyard shift.  You may actually not even have a job.  Or it could be that you are a single parent raising kids with no help just doing what you can to get by.  Maybe you work part time somewhere and you just simply hate it.  The reality is,

It is hard

No matter what walk of life you are going through, there are healthy things to do to relieve stress or doubt when you feel discouraged.  I play paintball, hang out with my mentors, play video games, work out, hang out with family and a few good friends, I write, I try to stay away from people or things that indiscriminately discourage me from my life goals, I pray. Point is. There is always a way to manage the stress or doubt that comes your way while trying to navigate your circumstances. Giving up is not an option.  Focus on having a healthy coping mechanism for hard times. You never fully know what life will throw at you, but over time you learn to anticipate hardship and see it as a natural ingredient of maturity. When that breakthrough comes through all the hard work and long suffering will be an after thought.

At The End Of The Day...

If you know some pointers to help people reach their goals please share them, even better, go help those people if you personally know them.  I believe that knowing what my passion is gives me purpose and focus.  Having a written plan helps give me direction and accountability.  Life is hard guys, accepting that allows you not to be paralyzed by it.  Believe me I know.  Since finding what it is I excel at I have been able to help many people.  I have learned not to take for granted the things I know and start making confident strides in serving people with my skill set.  I have learned to be a self starter and motivate myself.

As a result of taking this advice to heart I started my own business as an electronics technician.   I networked with various I.T. professionals and other personnel, I got involved with industries by writing articles and chatting with influential minds in the market place all while striving to acquire certifications relevant to I.T. and software.  Not even three months into expanding my network and being active I receive a job offer from Apple Corporation and GameStop headquarters.  Now, as a newly hired employee with GameStop Corporation, I get to work at headquarters, doing what it is I love for a living with a company I also love.  This is no game.

At the end of the day, stay positive and keep at it.  If you felt this blog helped you, thanks so much for reading and sharing!  If you feel it made you rich feel free to send me a donation lol! :-)

Peace

The Great "i"

So I've received a lot of feedback to write my thoughts on the new iPhone 5S and 5C (and iOS7). Be sure to check out pertinent articles regarding everything iPhone at the end too!!

How does the new iOS7, iPhone 5S and 5C make me feel?

iOS7

Having built and refurbished iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S & 5's from scratch using apple grade parts, I am very familiar with the importance of iOS7. I think iOS7 is long over do. I hear mixed reviews on iOS7, but regardless, it is a necessary update. I think people will grow to like it too, sometimes change is good. Apple courts its fan base annually with an announcement disclosing a new phone with new specs and new features. However, The last iOS announcement Apple made announced the removal of native Google Maps app and YouTube app, while inserting Apple Maps app (remember that?? Of course you don't!!) Those changes didn't make a big splash with its constituents. In light of that, I personally believe the iOS7 update to be more of an achievement than the 5S and 5C. Why? I’m glad you asked…

An OS Is A Operating System

Like all system software, updates MUST be applied so that your device runs smoothly. They must be applied so that your device may utilize new hardware. Simply put, iOS7 is the backbone for all Apple features and is necessary to keep the phone running stably and securely (just like the updates you postpone on your computer because you don’t feel like restarting your system).

As faster processors, fingerprint scanners, better cameras, etc enter the mix you need software that can efficiently utilize your phones resources. You can have a phone with all kinds of neat functions but not be able to do simple things like multi task smoothly or have a useful notification center. Why? Because your operating system (OS) is probably outdated and/or configured in a very uninspiring way. So I’m happy Apple updated its operating system, many users already exclaim they like the added features that come with it. The iPhone 5S and 5C really don’t mean anything at all if the OS sucks. I think iOS7 was a major achievement in that it reverses some bad steps that were taken with the last OS while providing a good foundation the iPhone 5S and 5C can grow into.

I really think iOS7 was designed to position themselves to release big things for the iPhone 6, or quite possibly branch from “i” altogether to create something else entirely different (which wouldn't be a bad idea!) I believe that iOS7 is the newest most recent update so it’s only natural that it is perceived as better.

iOS vs Android OS

(disclaimer: This section boils down to preference. If you care to here mine, read on. Otherwise, skip on down to: “iOS7 Parting Thoughts”)

If I had to compare iOS to Android OS, I feel Android still gets the edge. Google made a scene in the mobile industry with the Android operating system. Android is not a Galaxy S4, it’s not an HTC ONE X, it’s not a Moto X, it's not a Sony Xperia. It is the software that runs on these smartphones. Hence why they are nicknamed “Android Phones”…In Google’s world, Android OS updates always garnered wide popularity (much like how the iOS7 is to the Apple Dome today). The difference in my opinion, Google seems to have deeper involvement in collecting, manipulating and applying data in a format that gives people functionality, but most importantly: freedom to end users (us). This is why Google Maps, Google Search, YouTube, Gmail and many other Google apps are so widely preferred over similar applications. Google’s efforts and resources create intelligent applications that everyone is familiar with. Google is a developer hub by trade too, so when they first released Android software it was done experimentally to see how 3rd party developers and manufactures would utilize it. Google has been experimenting with their data like this for years.

Apple made innovative hardware and Apple specific software in the form of a phone (iPhone 3G) that revolutionized how we know smartphones moving forward. Google made innovative software for phone makers which changed how we interact with smartphones moving forward. Apple did truly start the smartphone revolution, but even Apple still incorporates a lot of Google’s interconnected applications on ALL iDevices. Apple (along with other major companies) have tried to phase Google infrastructure out of their primary operations, it’s not entirely impossible to do. However, Apple found that due to their limited data farms and resources, recreating their version of Google services would take time. Apple tried to wing people off of Google applications before, as mentioned above with iOS6. By abruptly getting rid of Google Maps and replacing it with Apple maps then forcing users to use workarounds for the omitted YouTube app, Apple experienced major whiplash. These changes were later reversed of course…

Apple is truly weary about their relationship with Google, but in an effort to keep operations running smoothly they decide (perhaps daily) to commit to make Google a pseudo priority. I believe seeing how apple users still heavily indulge/rely on Google services makes it the only reasonable thing Apple can do. Google provides quality end user experiences that nobody in the world can deny, so it stands to reason that manufactures building smartphones catering to their home brewed Android projects would bring out the best of Google’s trusted brand on mobile platforms.

Each new OS that Android releases comes with so little restriction to the source code that it allows app developers and manufacturers the unique freedom to create powerful features for apps and the physical phone itself. Because of this each new Android OS update is like getting a new phone. Patches and updates are right up Google’s alley, additionally, Google has a intrinsic audience of developers which contribute just as much to Android's OS source.  It seems to me that android users experience quality OS updates on a very consistent basis.

Apple users are experiencing this now with their awesome iOS7 update. I have heard Apple users exclaim, it is “like having a new iPhone”. Rightfully so, Apple really revamped the iOS this time, instead of just tweaking a few things here and there. The whole theme of iOS7 is different, and it’s design is made to handle a whole new list of features. Apple says this is the biggest OS update iPhones have ever undergone, since it's first generation. That is a long time.

It is the best one of all the iOS versions but as long as it took Apple’s software to reach this stage, Google has already been dancing on it…

This is important to note, because if I spend my money on something I want to truly know how my items in the cart measure up to competition. Again, preferences still play a major part when making comparisons!

You need a lot of data to continue to make intuitive forward thinking software that is both intelligent enough to learn from you and powerful enough to handle multiple generations of new hardware. The previous iOS versions certainly handled multiple generations of hardware, and quite masterfully by their standards. So this is not to say Apple CAN’T do it, they are! However, the company that has been crunching more data the longest stands to gain an edge in developing the intelligent and powerful software that wins over the ever changing hearts of the consumer. If one company begins to outpace the other in quality operating system updates then they also stand to win the smartphone war on new innovative features too...

Google has been collecting user data for how long now???

I believe that is why Google will continue to leap and bound in this area as long as the mobile industry continues to desire “something different”

A lot of features iOS7 recently released have long since been available on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) operating system. ICS 4.0 became available around this time, back in 2011, back when iOS5 was making my fellow nerds scream…Jelly Bean has since come out, and as a result, you have android phones utilizing air gestures, Eye Sensors, Smart Stylus, multi window screens, NFC, software compatibility with non-android systems; features and services that iOS7 either doesn't provide yet or is just now starting to master (and lets not even go into rooting vs jail breaking). Quite frankly, some of these things are not even on Apple’s agenda as they pursue other successful projects like iTunes, iCloud, Slo-Motion Video and AirDrop. So it's not like Apple can't duplicate these functionalities.  The question is, will the direction they pursue be the one people ultimately want?? Will it be worth the cost? Are they listening to what their people want?? We can only speculate…In the meantime, Google is preparing the release of its next OS version “Kit Kat”…who knows what all that will entail. I stand a witness though, that when you have multiple Android OS updates rolling out increasingly popular installments over the span of 4 years versus Apple’s 1 big “face-lift” in the past 6 years, it leads me to believe Google is making moves based off of successful anticipation of which tech to focus on developing in conjunction with giving the consumers what they ask for. And as an educated consumer, these are things I want to know!  For example, a poll suggest that the majority of apple users asked for/expected the next iPhone to have a 5" screen then that 5S and 5C should have had a 5" screen. Whether it is software or hardware or looks consumers shouldn't always have to feel like "maybe the next iPhone will have it" ...that gets old real quick.

iOS7 Parting Thoughts

Honestly??? I think everyone should have a fast intuitive notification center, I want everyone to enjoy iTunes Radio improvements, I think a fresh look on ones iPhone screen is a major bonus, I believe iPhones should have an operating system that takes advantage of the A7 processor chips’ speed and power. AirDrop software that works and doesn't slow the phone down?? Yes Please!

Dear iOS7, the Apple users have been waiting for you!

Cook should be relieved that the roll out of iOS7 was successful in the Apple Dome. Yes, I believe that iOS7 was a successful move. It’s the true first step away from Steve Job’s vision. I believe that moving out of the Jobs era will be an important transition for Apple.  Now that the company has taken real steps beyong the old regime, they may begin to see the continued importance of placing emphasis on OS updates. Hopefully Apple doesn't plan to wait 6 more years to complete the next revolutionary iOS update.  In an industry that changes every 6 weeks that would be a fatal business error. We’ll see though! It’s worked this long right??  This point is probably still up for debate.

The iPhone 5S and 5C

Moving on, the 5S and 5C serve as iterations of the model before it and sport fundamentally relevant upgrades (better camera, different colors, etc), with a bell (upgraded processor) and whistle (fingerprint scanner). I feel like these changes along with the fact that it is a NEW phone by default make these models worthy of being called the best iPhone.

1)  I feel people who just love “Apple” the company, or the design of the phones, or the user familiarity, or the proprietary environment Apple provides…should still assess their situation before buying the new iPhone. Do you own an iPhone 5 already? Then buying a 5S or 5C wouldn't be worth the coin as you are practically purchasing the same phone you already have. Remember, the OS is the back bone! You are already getting iOS7, for free. The i5 family as a whole is optimized to take advantage of iOS7. You guys would be better off waiting for the iPhone 6 you know? If you own any model under the 5 then YOU will benefit the most seeing how you will see more functional and aesthetic change in the design (bigger screen, thinner, lighter, different colors depending on the model), hardware (faster processor, better camera, fingerprint scanner depending on the model) and software (iOS7). If you are just rolling in the dough, or have a “hook up” then have at the new phones! Stand in line to get the full experience!  Oh yeah, and don't forget to donate to my business too!

2)  If you are open to the idea of comparing the new iPhone 5S and 5C to other manufacturers altogether you may find surprisingly powerful replacements that better suit your preferences. Today, you have smartphones showcasing all the things and peripherals that iPhones showcase if not more (ie Google Chrome Cast, on-board memory, expandable memory, removable batteries, micro usb ports, 5" super amoled displays, processors and graphics processors and operating systems that yield unique users experiences, Air Gestures, NFC, S Pen, S Voice, Video Gaming, open ecosystems for ease of compatibility with other tech, all of Google’s Apps “Optimized”.) That is a whole other post I realize, but if you ever have questions feel free to ask me or anybody you feel is knowledgeable with tech. You’ll know if you fall into this group or not if you weren't that impressed with this year’s Apple announcements or you think iOS7 looks like Android OS. I implore you to look around and take your time... No reason to spend that hard earned Christmas cash “just because everybody's doing it".

Conclusion?

In conclusion, be a smart buyer and I'm sure you will make the best choice that suits your preferences. There, I've told you what I make of all this! Share your thoughts and tell me how you all feel!! How do you feel about iOS7? iPhone 5S? iPhone 5C?

PS4 Vs Xbox ONE: Moving Closer

Launch dates are set, The PlayStation 4 will hit shelves November 15th. Xbox One, Novemeber 22nd.

Everybody who knows me knows that I am a 360 man.  I wholeheartedly enjoyed playing the 360 over the PS3.  Comparatively, I felt that Xbox Live provided an excellent environment where gamers in the community benefited from exclusive DLC content and earlier game releases for titles such as Call Of Duty.  I took pride in my achievement points and how the provided functional value to hours of gameplay. The Kinect was seamless and extremely intuitive, navigating through apps, espn, games and even common system functionality (All with the sound of my voice, "Xbox Off...Yes" lol)... The system and peripherals were cheaper than the PS3's.  Most importantly I think, the majority of my friends used xbox as well.

However, I found myself playing games early last year less and less.  I had recently picked up a new job last December with more demanding hours, working as an electronics technician.  A lot of my time got re-prioritized, and that actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise (As we'll hear later).  Further more, my job required that I have a capable laptop for handling daily operations. I purchased my laptop and as the month progressed I spent more freetime studying and researching on that and my Galaxy S3 instead of using my xbox.

One night I was fixing a PS3 for a client.  Mid way through the repair I began to think on my gaming console and it's household utility, or lack there of, as of late.  It was actually collecting dust.  I couldn't even remember the last thing I used my xbox for... That is no knock to the 360, my life just became very involved with other things...I also knew the next generation consoles were right around the corner. With all my re-prioritized time I knew I wasn't going to have time for any new titles for the 360 either.  It didn't make sense to buy new games

That's when it hit me

I need a fresh start

For Starters:

I decided it was time to shelve the whole "Xbox 360 vs PS3" debate. Whatever the 360 and PS3 was is in the past as far as I'm concerned.  Being a fan of Xbox was ok, but if this fresh start was going to work I needed to be invested in learning about the state of the gaming industry as a whole.

Additionally, I reaffirmed that if I'm going to invest my hard earned money and valuable time into a "next generation console" I need to spend some time really listening to the people of the industry and all of you.

Lastly, I sold my 360 Elite, games, Kinect, Year refund on my Live Account, etc. It was hard....(ha)...In retrospect, I'm glad I did it.  It has given me a chance to give honest assessments of both sides since then: Microsoft and Sony developments, their business practice histories, the companies profits outside of the gaming industry (Computers, TV, Smartphones, Tablets, Enterprise Software, Smart Watches, etc), the promises, the lies, the games, how the gaming developers feel about each company, Nintendo's ever evolving agenda, Conferences, various other X factors.

As a gamer this was a big deal for me...Challenge accepted. On a broader spectrum it has been a fun ride, working with timeless technology, networking with some really cool people in the gaming industry and learning a lot of skills further helping me provide you with relevant media (oh yeah...that was the blessing in disguise!)

With that being said, Microsoft has made ALOT of concessions to the Xbox ONE that honestly look very appealing on paper (assuming it wasn't written with erasable ink). They have great Xbox ONE bundles available for pre-order, great games lined up for day-one launch, all the major restrictions have been reversed for now.  Considering how the Xbox ONE campaign started things are definitely looking competitive again.  For me personally, I'm still sold on the PS4.  Sony has not given me any indication that they intend to repeat last generations (PS3) mistakes.  So far I trust them more than Microsoft to look out for the gamer's interest moving forward. Plus, I love FPS and all, but Microsoft never had Final Fantasy (lol)...  Anyways...  Looking out for a consumers interests can be a tricky thing though so the war is far from over. Anything can happen. You may know what the consumer wants.  That is easy enough. When you attempt to develop something new and better you're tasked with creating a solution that incorporates the already aforementioned wants along with the subtle, and sometimes unspoken, needs. Pole position in a industry like this is no cake walk.

What are your thoughts on the new systems coming out?  I know some people who aren't going to get them! They are going to stick with what they have. Microsoft (and Sony) will still be providing games, entertainment, and updates to the 360 and PS3 for a couple more years. I know some people who are getting both! (Yeah, that escalated pretty quickly.)  I know some people who believe the Nintendo Wii U is still onto something unique and has yet to reach it's full potential.  PC gaming has grown even more popular with services like Steam.  Let me know!

There is no right answer here, only a right balance of preferences...

Peace

Remembering The Old

Game Consoles & Peripheral Mods

You can learn a lot from your past. In this picture I was learning how to solder on some "red" LEDs

An hour later I completed that project & took a picture so I could remember all the "fun" I had lol

Every now and then it's good to look back at past trials.  If anything, let it serve as a reminder to you.

Remember the lessons. Remember the consequences. Remember the achievement.

Be thankful you can look back.  Let it remind you of why you move forward in the first place

PS4 vs Xbox One: Gamescom Edition

The war wages on... fan boys and girls from both camps (Xbox and PlayStation) make their stances known.  Gamescom 2013 was an event in which Microsoft and Sony gave further detail into new games that will be launching soon, release dates, price cuts, game and system bundles, and of course a bunch of glitzy high profile demos!
Were you impressed with each companies conference?

You can view the Sony Conference Here
You can view the Microsoft Conference Here

Honestly, I'm happy for the direction these companies are pursuing gaming as a whole this year. Gamescom simply reaffirmed to me that hard core gamers definitely still have something worthwhile to look forward to.

The Xbox One doesn't have a release date yet, only a window: sometime in November.
Sony's PS4 on the other hand will be released November 15th.

The Xbox One will be releasing about 23 games as launch titles. (Here is the list)
While the PS4 will only be releasing 15 physical disc games, with additional games slated to come out very close to the launch date if not on it. (See the list here)

Each system will have it's exclusives, in attempts to win more pre orders.  I believe that only one system will ultimately come out on top this year.  With both systems sporting very impressive engine's under the hood and almost identical launch titles, it's too soon to say which one will emerge dominant.

If I had to place my bets on a system though, it would be the PS4.  It has not once waivered on it's commitment to caring for it's core market.  That is not to say that Sony's ecosystem is perfect. They just played their cards right.  The E3 conference still resonates in my mind as a major win for the Sony camp.  Microsoft imposed some radical changes on it's core fan base then made the ridiculous claim that these changes could not be undone.

We see that was a lie though.  Clearly all of those changes have since then been rescinded...

What does that tell me?

That says, Microsoft still has a ways to go before I comfortably invest in a company that just came fresh off of it's most bass ackwards gaming strategy ever.  Seriously.  I love the box.  Many people know I do, but Microsoft didn't remove those restrictions because they were "listening to all our pleas and cries"... They did it because the PlayStation 4's initial pre-sells almost quadrupled the Xbox Ones.

That is not to discredit how courageously loud the gaming community responded to Microsoft's belligerence.  We definitely proved that casual gamers and core gamers alike still hold valuable input on the final say.

You can debate that last point as subjective, but the fact remains: these Xbox One restrictions were suppose to be irreversible.  They turned them over to save their own butts.  Now Microsoft is heralded as "the company who listens to it's fans"...So once things level out again and all the fan boys and girls quiet down, whats to stop them from reimposing more unwarranted change?  Mid year even? Distrust, That may sound like a farfetched reason to forgo dropping $500 on a new Box.  But not to me. It is a shame because I am an xbox fan, but I think it best to wait out the first year of Xbox One's historical legacy and monitor the direction Microsoft plans to go with those restrictions they dropped. I guarantee you will see them again.  Maybe the timing will be better and some of those changes will be more relevant and accepted in the gaming community?

That remains to be seen. In the mean time, be smart, game on.....

Peace,

One Reason Why I Repair Tech

A slew of articles have emerged recently regarding the after effects of exploding or over-heating smart phones.  One burned down a house. One electrocuted a woman to death. Now, one exploded and sent a lady to the hospital.

(This is not to exclude the many cases that occur without even being reported...)

THIS is why I do what I do, and that is, repair electronic devices. A lot of these incidents happened because either a person dropped their phone and it began to overheat, or the glass got cracked and it gradually got worse, or maybe the phone truly was lemon...either way-

The point is this, technology exist to "help" us. If you notice your device doing something strange, investigate it! We cannot fully take advantage of tech if we don't take the time to maintenance it, diagnose it, recycle it, repair it, etc.  I repair tech mostly because I realize people need help doing this and in helping them they can get the most out of their smartphone, tablet, computer, gaming console...

In a safe manner.

So if you're walking around with a cracked phone screen, or your computer or tablet doesn't work, or your smartphone gets hot please feel free to contact me. My prices are competitive, but whether you go through me or someone else, don't let price be the reason you don't get your broken things fixed

Sell it, trash it, get it fixed, buy a new one.

Make sure the threat of your broken device harming you or others around you is neutralized.
Don't continue to use your broken electronics nonchalantly: it's a serious hazard.

I included the story of the iPhone 5 exploding in that lady's eye below:
Check out @Joe_Andrew's Tweet: https://twitter.com/Joe_Andrew/status/367640429962854402

At the end of the day be safe, be smart. I realize some situations can't be helped, but most of the time we walk around with broken phones, tablets, etc without a clue as to how much more at risk we are to accidental injuries (and in some cases fatality).

User error is no excuse for endangering yourselves and those around you.
Peace

Paintball Maintenance !

This video includes a Tippmann A5 with a response trigger and flatline barrell attached...

The first round of paintballs I fired didn't travel very far and the response trigger didn't work at all. There was a problem with the air flow from the cyclone feed to the response trigger for sure, so I made some adjustments and decided to test it out!  Everything tested out well, and the marker is fully operational now.  You can watch the response trigger in action here!

Additionally, I'll also be repairing various model paintball guns too!

Contact me for more details!

The Gaming Community: The Voice Of Accountability

If you didn't know by now, I'm a gamer.  While I don't live in a basement or wear the nerdy glasses that require tape to keep them held together (apologies if that is you), I do play video games and I'm passionate about this pastime activity.  However, it came to my knowledge that something very ignorant occurred last week.  The "public face of Black Ops II's multiplayer team", David Vonderhaar, recently made some routine updates to the multiplayer aspect of the game which included modifications for different maps, and reduced power for specific weapons.  The ignorant part was this:

David actually received death threats on twitter from Call Of Duty fans, stating he and his family would be murdered (because of the changes he made)

Follow the details of the story here at your own leisure... In the mean time, let me humor you...  Just last month a kid got arrested and imprisoned for making jokingly sarcastic threats on Facebook about a video game.  That situation was obviously messed up, kid made an honest mistake (I deduce this seeing how his comments were read out of context and followed by "lol" and "jk")...but we see the severity of that mistake and where it landed him...

But This???

To communicate directly to (David) stating you want to harm him and his family because your imaginary weapons don't pack that "umph!" you need to protect our homeland from the comfort of your moms living room couch???  Or let me do you one better...to make death threats to David and his family because he was doing his job???  Whether you were joking or not, that was/is wrong.  As a gamer, if you know anything then you know that the American community holds within it a core group of people who believe video games are bad and that they cause violence... Now obviously I disagree with this notion.  I'm a grown, responsible adult, who can distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality.  In fact, I grew up playing video games of all kinds.  I turned out to be a man of many pastimes with a strong passion for technology.  I'm not tooting my own horn, but I turned out just like any other normal person.  And guess what???  There ARE other gamers out there who are mature who, like me, get grouped in with immature, whiny, bratty, impulsive, unstable, irresponsible PEOPLE, that also happen to be gamers...  Unfortunately, When ignorant things like this happen, it only makes it harder for mature gamers to play without being condemned for various societal collapses.  I am uniformed on which fans issued these death threats, but that kind of conduct is never acceptable and as a gamer I am truly ashamed that there are people out there that would let these (very trivial and basic) update patches disturb them to the point of threatening another life. Let alone a whole family.  And in a super media sensitive society where everything you say can be used against you, it just isn't a very intelligent thing to joke about either.  Period.  So to all the gamers out there who play responsibly, you need to speak up.  Too many times, the ideal of video games receive negative connotations.  But when you (the responsible ones) sit back and say nothing, nothing changes...
Your voice is a powerful tool of change, or did you not see how quickly Microsoft made history back tracking on all their momentum-ending restrictions?  They back tracked because we the community spoke up!  (Still too early to say if they back tracked in time...another story for another time...)

In closing I'll just say this.  This event pressed on my heart and while this is just one blog on one site from one guy.  I see a collection of voices calling to attention the need for in house accountability after this latest exercise of carelessness...  Nobody is perfect so I don't speak from some lofty platform of self righteousness, but to the unassuming gamers lacking intelligence, do better.  Use common sense people.

With all the great games, tech, and potential for fun why throw it all away over some half thought out prison prone tweet?

That question was rhetorical of course....peace
